Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • Pink or blue food coloring (depending on gender reveal)
  • 1 cup butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then mix in the vanilla extract.
  • Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with milk, starting and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.
  • Divide the batter evenly into two bowls. In one bowl, add pink or blue food coloring and mix well.
  • Pour each colored batter into a separate cake pan. Using a toothpick or skewer, swirl the colors together to create a marbled effect.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • For the frosting, beat the butter and powdered sugar together until creamy. Add vanilla extract and heavy cream, and continue to beat until fluffy.
  • Once the cakes are completely cool, frost the top of one cake layer. Place the second layer on top and frost the entire cake, smoothing the sides and top.
  • Decorate the cake with sprinkles, edible flowers, or other festive decorations as desired.
